Summer Travels

Travel Tuesday is here and something I hold synonymous with summer is summer vacation. Growing up, my family took routine trips to our lake house in Maine but the occasional trips to the Jersey Shore or North Carolina’s Outer Banks was always something I looked forward to. Today, I want to discuss summer vacation but with a twist: your summer honeymoon. Whether you’re planning for summer ’13 or ’14 we’ve compiled a list of the best summer destinations you need to see.

Nice, France

Nice, located on the Mediterranean at the bottom of the alps, has a cosmopolitan vibe commonly associated with the French Riviera. Nice is a common gateway to other locations along the coast and provides easy access for day trips to Monaco and Cannes. Indulge in their fashionable boutiques, world-class restaurants, or stroll along their long strips of beaches. This is the place if you’re looking for a nice summer tan or want to take a hiking trip to the alps. We suggest you stay at: Hotel Villa Les Cygnes, Le Palais de la Mediterranee, or Hotel Suisse.

Bar Harbor, ME

Down east Maine is famous for it’s private islands: Acadia National Park, Chanterelle, or Oar, and breathtaking views for the many cottages and bed and breakfasts that line the shore. Being approximately 3 1/2 hours from Portland, ME, encourages travelers to take scenic drives along the coast or explore the Atlantic shore. We encourage you to head to Atlantic Climbing School if you’re looking for an adventure, go for a hike through Bar Island Trails, or indulge in favorite Maine foods like lobster and clam chowder. Stay at: The Bayview, Atlantic Eyrie Lodge, or West Street Hotel.

Montreal, Canada

Montreal gives travelers a taste of France without leaving the country and provides easy accessibility from the United States. After cold winter weather lifts, Montreal offers numerous summer events and festivals like the Montreal Beer Festival in June, Montreal Jazz Festival in late June/early July, and World Film Festival in late August to mid September. Visit the historic sites, go shopping through their many street markets and sample sales, and eat French food that tastes authentic. Hang up your hat at: Auberge Bonaparte, Hotel le Crystal Montreal, or Chateau de L’Argoat.

Bora Bora, Tahiti

If you want an adventure in a far off place, you can’t go wrong with Bora Bora in French Polynesia. Their incredibly luxurious high class resorts can easily dump your wallet, but not if you travel smart. Bora Bora is a volcanic caldera that includes exotic wildlife like sharks and rays and lends an opportunity to explore the lagoons with scuba diving, kayaking, jet skiing, and kite boarding. Take a Jeep tour through American WW II bunkers, purchase black pearls, and enjoy Tahitian food at their plentiful restaurants. Take a load off at: Le Meridien Bora Bora, Chez Nono, or Sofitel Bora Bora Marara Beach Resort.

San Juan Islands, Washington

The San Juan Islands call home to the Pacific Northwest and reside 3 hours outside of Seattle. Commonly known for rainy, cold weather, Washington leaves the dreary weather for July and August where daytime temperatures rarely get above 70 degrees. Take a ferry from Anacortes, WA but make sure the rent a car or bring your own in order to get the most of the island. Going zip lining at Friday Harbor, go whale watching (we highly encourage this), and take a bike tour. Visitors love to look through local art galleries and bookshops and enjoy the incredibly fresh seafood. Sleep at: Pebble Cove Farm, Rosario Resort and Spa, or Lonesome Cove Resort.

We hope these 5 options have you thinking about your summer honeymoon but if you want a list of more locations you should read Frommer’s Best 20 Summer Vacations in the U.S.A, Travel + Leisure’s Most Romantic Summer Destinations, and Trip Advisor’s Traveler’s Choice List for 2012. Getting ready for summer is exciting but planning for a honeymoon is even more exciting so make sure you plan ahead, get ready for adventure, and make memories!

Goodbye Winter, Hello Telluride

Thankfully, parting with winter doesn’t mean parting with the ski season.  Many Western mountains, such as Telluride, offer spring skiing. Trade in your heavy winter apparel for a t-shirt and a vest and come join us on the mountain!

Taking a Long Weekend

You and your fiance may come to find yourself in a sticky situation when you begin planning your honeymoon–you only have a weekend to spend together. Whether it be because of work obligations, family, or school it can be a bummer to only spend Friday-Sunday on a get-a-way with your new husband. It’s not so bad, you’ll be together forever and when your lives get less busy you can always take a second honeymoon. This Travel Tuesday we want to show you have fabulous a weekend honeymoon can be and why it’s not a horrible idea.

Take a Boat Cruise

Whether it be for the weekend or just for the day, a boat cruise down the Mississippi or up the Atlantic or Pacific coast could be all you need. They include a lot of the activities you get on a cruise such as dining, entertainment, activities like spa treatments and ports of call. You’ll be saving money taking a boat cruise versus a resort type cruise so feel free to opt for the best room on the ship and be sure to plan your time of departure sometime around your wedding date.

Be a Tourist in Your Town

Your hometown has a lot of opportunities for a romantic weekend that you haven’t discovered yet and the upside is that if you discover something you love like a new restaurant or museum, you can go there again. Book a hotel in your town or nearby big city and shop, eat, and enjoy new activities you didn’t know you could do. There are a lot of city guide apps that help you explore the city and find something romantic and new to do.

Throw Out The GPS

Get in the car and take a road trip. Drive somewhere you’ve never been and don’t worry about getting there on time or getting lost because that’s half the fun. Many apps like GuidePal, Yelp, and MTrip will keep you from feeling completely lost and feature reviews, directories, and can help you find things to do. Don’t drive for more than 3-4 hours and take time to visit the local attractions.

Embrace Your Inner Child

Take a trip to a theme park, boardwalk, zoo, or arcade. Spend a weekend with your husband riding roller coasters, playing games, and eating foods like cotton candy or popcorn. Many cities have local theme parks or water parks but keep in mind the seasons unless you live in a location where that is not an issue. You could also feel free to drive a couple hours to a park or destination near your home and enjoy a new city.

Jet Somewhere Close

The good thing about flying, you can get to many amazing destinations in under four hours. If you and your fiance travel often then you may have racked up a lot of points and are eligible for free or discounted flights. Fly to a major city of desination that is close by and spend the weekend in that city. This isn’t as much of a hassle as it seems because airports and hotels have made it so easy to get to your location.

Other weekend getaway ideas are camping, staying at home, or going on a picnic. I love the idea of exploring a new city near your house with your fiance becasue it gives you time to find a place you both love and is close to where you live. Don’t feel guilty about not being able to take a full blown 2 week honeymoon because you have till death to you part to spend a honeymoon together.

Happy Planning,

Tat

Spice It Up

We’ve got our eyes on Grenada, a natural gem offering 133 miles of virtually unspoiled terrain. The tri-island of Carriacou, Petite Martinique, and Grenada maintains its reputation for friendly locals, spices, and serenity. Spice up your life in Grenada by tying the knot, honeymooning, exploring waterfalls, visiting national parks, scuba diving, and basking in the sunshine.

Eternal Summer in Thailand

Do you dream of a land of sunshine and eternal summer? We’re combining two stunning locations to bring you a timeless adventure in one of Asia’s most popular honeymoon locations—Tourism Thailand at our Los Angeles Bride Event on March 25. These two spots have a lot in common, endless sunbathing, beach activities, and warm weather but if you’re looking for an experience outside of your comfort zone we encourage you to check out their booth at the show.

Chang Island

Tourism Thailand caters to many of the country’s most astonishing locations such as Ang Thong National Marine Park, Chang Island, Lan Island, and many other exotic islands and beaches. Getting there many require some leg work but flying into Bangkok and taking a ferry or sea plane will ease your vacation and give some charm to the experience.

Chumphon Marine Festival

Want to visit Thailand and experience some culture? Plan your honeymoon around one of their events or festivals and embrace what makes the country so special. Some of the events and festivals include: Laanta Lanta Festival, International Lantern Festival-Colors of the South, Trat Memorial Day, and Pattaya International Music Festival. Almost all are accessible by car or boat and we can guarantee that the events will be life changing and memorable.

Phuket

The tourism board recommends visiting Koh Lann, Phuket, and Chiang Rai and we encourage you to check out their special honeymoon rates and explore their website for all the exciting adventures this country has to offer.

Happy Planning,

Tat

Getting From Here to There

Congratulations on deciding to have a destination wedding! You’re taking the road less traveled but this is a memorable road indeed. Destination weddings are perfect for couples who love to travel, met while on vacation, or want to be adventurous and try something new; whatever your reason it’s going to involve some hefty planning. The first step to getting all of your guests to your destination is designing your invitations and there are tons of ways to incorporate your location or the experience itself into your designs.

Maps

We love using maps for invite ideas because you get to add some elements of the location into the design. It also is helpful when showing guests exactly where it is. It lets guests know up front where you’re planning on getting married instead of reading the fine print.

Culture

We strongly encourage using the location as part of your theme because similar to the map idea, the culture let’s guests know what to expect. If you’re getting married in India for example, think of using their colors, symbols, or typography.

Passports

If there was an award for best keepsake, this would receive a nomination because it is so fun and memorable. You’re inviting guests to not only your destination wedding but preparing them for an exciting journey.

Tickets

Tickets, much like the passports, remind guests that they are about to embark on a journey. It adds to the travel theme and you can customize it with the location they’re heading to.

Get creative with colors, themes, culture, and iconography. Destination wedding invitations are so versatile but I highly suggest adding where guests will be headed to so they’re prepared for the location. This is a theme that can carry on throughout the wedding planning and make everything cohesive.

Happy Planning,

Tat
